The ghost at the heart of the problem…
Clayton Merk, accomplished, yet arrogant, businessman, has a reputation for one-night stands and being steadfastly anti-relationship. When he decides to return home—to the root of all his problems—he brings a co-worker with him as a buffer against the past. Even though he’s ready to lay old ghosts to rest, he certainly didn’t expect a literal ghost to lend a hand.
Brad Jorgensen, Clay’s former best friend, has also clung to the past in an unhealthy way. He resents Clay for a lot of things, not the least of which is his cousin’s death decades earlier. At one time they’d been closer than brothers, but blame and anger are powerful weapons of destruction, and they’ve left Brad in a wasteland of self-doubt, hatred, and loneliness.
The ghost at the heart of the problem has had enough. Bobby isn’t pleased with his cousin or his ex. Their refusal to let go of the past has kept him on a plane where he doesn’t belong and isn’t at home. He’s expended all his energy trying to get through to Brad, without success, but Clay’s return finally gives him a foot in the door…or out the door.
If he could just get the two stubborn men together.
Raine O'Tierney approached L.J. and me a few months back with an idea -- an anthology of novellas surrounding the theme of healing & recovery. Of course we jumped on board right away.
And in May, those stories will be hitting the shelves! The stories will be listed individually as novellas, and also bundled together in an anthology that is available in paperback.
We received our cover art today from the amazing Paul Richmond, so we wanted to share right away!
Here are our covers, as well as the blurbs:
Piece Us Back Together
Life can seem bleak for people suffering devastating injuries or illnesses of the mind and body, and every day can be a struggle. But sometimes, when hope seems in short supply, they find a reason to keep up the fight. The men in these stories face some of the most difficult challenges imaginable, but fortunately they won’t be facing them alone, because when everything seems darkest, a point of light appears. With compassion, understanding, and love, these hurt souls have a chance to piece the broken parts of their lives and themselves into something strong and beautiful. Love might even be able to mend the most serious wounds of all—those of the heart.

It had come like a thief in the night, an invisible force that had wiped out life as they had known it, sending them from 1981 back to 1881. The cause of The Pulse had remained a mystery and become the cause of speculation of fear. In a heartbeat, stock markets had crashed, power plants had shut down, and the land became poisoned by sewage, chemicals and, in some areas, radiation. If it had microchips in it, it was dead, finished beyond all repair. The anomaly which had wiped out their life had become known as The Pulse and the events following it had become known as The Crash.

Okay, so not really. Wishful thinking.
Lately, I've been working on a series that follows the lives of emergency responders. It's a lot darker than what I usually write, and a little bit gritty. There's elements of mystery and suspense, and it was coming together really well in my head. I know where I'm going with it, four books in advance. Things are linked together, intertwined, and it is a lot different than the usual somewhat fluffy, fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants approach I normally take.
It was going really well. I was almost a quarter of the way through the first book. This is a board of some of the images I was using for inspiration as I was writing. The first book follows a paramedic and a forensic pathologist who have known one another for years, but meet again through a mutual friend. I actually started writing this book around the same time I wrote Keeping Sweets, but it was shelved for the last three years or so. I submitted Tasting Notes a couple of weeks ago, and the characters started talking to me again. I was excited. The book was half written! Until I went back re-read it and was forced to delete all but 3,000 words. (The bad news is that I trashed almost 25,000 words. The good news is that my writing has improved quite a bit in the last three years!)
The writing was going well. Until all of a sudden, these other guys showed up. An amateur photographer working as a temp, living in L.A., trying to make a go of it. And a successful underwear model who is a little bit spoiled, a lot bratty, and more than a little damaged.
They arrived on the scene and moved in, taking over everything else for the last few days. We're back to the fluffy, fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants thing I'm so used to, but these guys are a lot more vivid than my characters usually are, so I've set aside everything else and I've started their story.
And so far, I'm loving it!
There is something pretty incredibly happening today over at Diversereader and it runs until 11.59PM EST on 1st May.
224 authors, bloggers, and reviewers have agreed to make donations in an attempt to raise money for charities across the world. We are hoping that this week, rather than spending money on books, you'll consider donating that money to a worthy charity instead. If you're not able to donate, please share the charity's links, and tell your friends. It's amazing what the power of our community can do.
Once you've donated or spread the word about your LGBT charity, head on over to the LGBTQ Push Back Charity Giveaway here: http://diversereader.blogspot.com/2015/04/lgbtq-push-back-charity-giveaway.html
Leave a comment letting them know what you did. That's all you need to do to be entered into the contest. Once the contest closes, Rafflecopter will randomly pick winners from the entrants and they will be matched up with donors on a first-come, first-served basis.
Three fundraisers have been set up to counter the hateful effects of Indiana’s SB 101. #Pizza4Equality is aiming to match the money raised by *that* pizza parlor, with all donations going to Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Fund. Another fundraiser is aiming to raise $100,000 for Indiana Youth Group. Finally, Planting Peace is trying to raise $100,000 to provide beds for homeless LGBT people.
You can choose one of those, or another LGBT charity of your choice. Every little bit counts!
